Sarracenia x UNC Hybrid 'Red Bug'

S. 'Redbug'  is one of several dwarf cultivars developed by Larry Mellichamp at the Univ. of North Carolina, 'Redbug,'.  It's parentage is  (Sarracenia rubra ssp. wherryi × Sarracenia rubra ssp. rubra).   'Redbug' has a compact habit 6-10" and is a vigorous grower producing many new pitchers in clump form from a single crown all summer long.  Deep red veining and a wavy or scalloped hood make this vibrant beauty an excellent accent to lighter color plants in the bog.   'Redbug' is unique in that it's pitcher hood is especially wide and unlike may pitchers the deep colors of 'Redbug' will be enjoyed all winter long when grown in a protected area!  When grown in full sun the pitchers turn a glorious deep red.  In shade, the pitchers are green.  Pitchers are a modified leaf that enable the plant to trap insects which provide nutrients unavailable in boggy environs.  Hardy to zone 5.
