Ceratophyllum demersum, Hornwort, is a native submergent plant with little or no roots anchoring it to the bottom. Instead it forms dense mats that float or are suspended in the water column that provide excellent cover for fish and young amphibians. Notably Ceratophyllum is evergreen even in the coldest of waters, sinking to the bottom and providing cover for fish thru the winter. Hornwort has stiff branching stems with whorled leaves giving it a dense appearance under water. Simply breaking off a tip or portion of the plant is all it takes to introduce it into another body of water.
