Equisetum fluviatile, Water horsetail, is a fairly slender medium-sized Equisetum growing 1-2' tall in dense dark green colonies along shorelines and shallow water. Although lacking true leaves or flowers, the upright stems of Water horsetail add a nice vertical accent to horizontal shoreline edges. Water horsetail plant provides habitat for pond life and was used historically for scouring, sanding and filing because of the high silica content in the stems. Horsetails have the ability to absorb heavy metals from soil and are often used in remediation projects involving heavy metal contaminants.
